I. Why am I doing this?
Let’s be honest—nobody grows up saying, “When I grow up, I want to cold call strangers and ask them about their budget!” Most kids dream about being astronauts, doctors, or at least professional dog walkers.
But here we are. Somehow, we’ve landed in the world of sales. And while the stereotypes (pushy car salesman, anyone?) still linger, the reality is far more interesting.
So why do people jump into sales?
💰 The money isn’t bad. (Okay, it can be very good… if you hit quota.)
⏰ Flexibility. You can manage your own schedule… which sometimes means scheduling calls at 7 AM and 7 PM.
🧩 Problem-solving. Salespeople are consultants in disguise.
🤝 The people. If you like talking, listening, and occasionally negotiating like you’re on a reality TV show, sales might be your thing.
II. What did I get myself into?
Here’s the kicker: when I first started, I thought sales was about making money, winning awards, and taking amazing President’s Club trips.
Then reality set in:
How do I even find prospects?
Once I find them, what sales process keeps deals moving instead of stalling out for six months?
How do I handle the tough questions without sweating like I’m on trial?
Negotiating… oh boy.
Closing… feels more like a chess match than a handshake.
Growing accounts and maintaining relationships? That’s the long game.
And of course, the holy grail: hitting quota while still having a life.
Turns out, sales is less about glitzy award shows and more about strategy, persistence, and—let’s be real—learning from mistakes.
III. Professional Sales is both a strategy and an art
Here’s the fun part: sales is where business strategy meets creativity.
It’s about:
📊 Forecasting like an economist (without putting people to sleep).
🧠 Understanding how customers think (or at least pretending you do).
😎 Being authentic—because people can smell “salesy” a mile away.
🤝 Partnering smartly—because sometimes your partners open doors you can’t.
⚙️ Using the right tools (yes, CRM is your friend, even when it feels like your enemy).
🦎 Adapting constantly. What worked last quarter may not work today.
💪 Working smart and hard (emphasis on the smart).
IV. Our journey together
Here’s where you come in. Every two weeks, I’ll share:
Lessons learned from the sales battlefield
Practical tactics you can try right away
Resources to help you not just survive in sales—but enjoy it, thrive in it, and maybe even laugh along the way
I’d love for this to be a two-way street: share your feedback, tell me what’s working for you, and if you find value here, forward it to a fellow salesperson who’s still asking themselves… “What did I get myself into?”
Cheers,
Nick Jovanovic
